March 1980. The windows shook, the air was full of smoke, and the sound of an armored tank on Amsterdam pavers sounded like something from another world. Yet here it was happening - right in the middle of the distinguished Vondelstraat, in the heart of Amsterdam. Not a war zone, but a residential neighborhood where the state and its citizens faced each other head-on.

The trigger: a squat.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Amsterdam was full of empty buildings, while the housing shortage was high. Young people, students, idealists - they drew their own plan and squatted what was vacant. Not to demolish, but to live. To claim living space in a city that gave them nothing.

But the government had had enough of confrontations. In March 1980, a squatted building on Vondel Street had to be vacated. What followed exceeded all expectations.

Squatters built barricades of bike racks, fences and trash containers. They threw paint, stones, anything and everything that was loose. The police responded with tear gas, water cannons and arrest teams. The city turned into a battlefield. On the street was an armored vehicle of the military police - for the first time since World War II, tanks drove through Amsterdam.

Thousands of people gathered. Some to protest, others to watch, to cheer, to whistle. The city held its breath. This wasn't just about one building any longer. It was about power, about control, about who decides who gets to live there.

After days of confrontation, the state prevailed. The squatters were evicted, the building vacated. But the images - of smoke, rioters and tanks in an Amsterdam street - remained.
