The building in front of you, the Brouwershuis, was once the nerve center of Antwerp's beer industry. And it owes its existence to one of the most remarkable figures the city has ever produced: Gilbert van Schoonbeke.

Born in 1519, Van Schoonbeke was not just a builder. He was a strategist who controlled every piece of the construction chain, from the brickworks and lime kilns to the timber supply. In fifteen years, he delivered 24 new streets, 3 markets, and an entire harbor district. Squares like the Vrijdagmarkt and the Stadswaag, which you can still visit today, were his creations. He essentially gave Antwerp its modern skeleton.

But power on that scale tends to create enemies. The Brouwershuis stood at the heart of Van Schoonbeke's beer monopoly, which forced local brewers to abandon their own facilities and consolidate here under his control. In 1554, the frustration boiled over into a full popular revolt.

Van Schoonbeke held onto his monopoly, but the revolt made one thing clear: when one man controls the streets, the trade routes, and the beer supply, ordinary citizens will eventually push back. Apparently even in the 16th century, nobody liked a monopoly on their beer.
