Right here is where meat vendors first laid out wooden tables in 1217, creating what would become one of Europe's oldest continuously operating food markets. The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria has filled this spot with the sights, sounds, and smells of fresh trade for over eight centuries. Along the bustling La Rambla boulevard, where this iconic entrance stands, the market began as simple open air stalls near the old city gate.

The name Boqueria comes from the Catalan word boc, meaning goat, because this was originally the place where locals bought goat meat. For hundreds of years, farmers and butchers endured rain and scorching sun to sell their goods directly to the public. Everything changed in 1835 when rioters burned down the nearby Sant Josep Convent during the Feast of St. James. City authorities saw an opportunity and decided to transform the empty land into a proper covered market.

On March 19, 1840, workers laid the foundation stone for the permanent structure. The fish sellers operated separately until 1911, when they finally moved into the central market building. Three years later, in 1914, architects added the distinctive modernist metal roof that still shelters over 300 vendor stalls, protecting merchants and shoppers alike from the elements.
