The Großer Wannsee is a charming lake in Berlin with a unique blend of history and leisure. This arm of the Havel River, first mentioned in 1382, has witnessed many events and transformations. One of its darkest moments occurred in 1942, when the infamous Wannsee Conference was held at the Villa Marlier on its shore. Here, Nazi officials planned the so-called Final Solution. Today, the villa serves as a memorial and historical site, reminding visitors of the atrocities of the past.

In contrast, the Wannsee is also a beloved place for recreation. The opening of the Wannseebahn railway in 1874 turned the lake into a popular escape for Berliners. By 1907, the Strandbad Wannsee opened, offering a 1,200-meter-long sandy beach—the largest inland beach in Europe. It comes with full amenities such as showers, toilets, playgrounds, and boat rentals. Surrounding the lake are the upscale neighborhoods of Alsen and Wannsee, known for their luxurious villas and leafy avenues.

This part of Berlin ranks among the city’s wealthiest, blending historic charm with modern living. Another highlight nearby is Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island), located in the lake. Here stands Schloss Pfaueninsel, a castle built for Frederick William II. Both the island and the castle are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites, attracting countless visitors with their beauty and history.
