On January 20, 1942, fifteen senior Nazi officials gathered at a villa in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee. This meeting, known as the Wannsee Conference, marked a grim turning point in the Holocaust. Organized by Reinhard Heydrich, the conference aimed to coordinate the systematic extermination of Europe’s Jewish population—the so-called Final Solution. Attendees included representatives from various government ministries and the SS. While the meeting appeared bureaucratic, its purpose was horrifyingly clear: to formalize genocide.

Heydrich, appointed by Hermann Göring to implement this plan, presented detailed proposals for deporting Jews to extermination camps in occupied Poland. The minutes of the meeting, later discovered by Allied forces, reveal the chillingly detached language used to describe mass murder. Euphemisms such as “evacuation” and “special treatment” masked the reality: the planned killing of around 11 million Jews and other groups deemed undesirable.

The conference did not initiate the Holocaust—mass shootings and deportations were already underway—but it ensured that every branch of the Nazi administration worked together towards total annihilation. One infamous figure present was Adolf Eichmann, who recorded the proceedings and later became a key architect of the deportations. After the war, he was captured and tried, drawing global attention to the bureaucratic nature of the Wannsee Conference. Today, the villa serves as a memorial and museum, a stark reminder of the atrocities planned there.
