This station once stood as the closest you could get to the Atlantic by train. On 6 December 1890, Alcântara Mar opened its doors as the provisional terminus of the Cascais Line, a railway built to connect the capital with the coastal resort where King Luís I spent his summers. The line had started from Cascais in September 1889, built specifically because the Portuguese royal family had transformed the sleepy fishing village into their summer retreat since 1870.

What began as a royal convenience became a lifeline for thousands. Aristocrats, merchants, and working families could now escape to the seaside, turning coastal villages into fashionable destinations. For five years, this waterfront station in the Alcântara district was as far as the tracks went. Passengers arriving from inland had to disembark here, their journey to Cascais beginning at this industrial dockland surrounded by warehouses and ship moorings.

The station buzzed with travelers transferring between trains, porters hauling luggage, and vendors selling refreshments. The line finally reached Cais do Sodré on 4 September 1895, connecting directly to the city center. In 1926, the route became Portugal's first electrified heavy rail line. Architect Cottinelli Telmo later designed the modernist building that replaced the original structure, reflecting the station's importance as a gateway between working Alcântara and the elegant coast beyond.
