Look closely at the hilltop in Alcântara, and you will see a small domed chapel commanding views over the Tagus River. This is the Capela de Santo Amaro, a Renaissance treasure that has witnessed centuries of devotion since 1549. Fourteen friars from the Military Order of Christ built this circular sanctuary after returning from a pilgrimage to Rome. They chose the renowned architect Diogo de Torralva to design its distinctive round structure, crowned by a dome.

An inscription carved into the doorway still records the exact moment construction began: February 12, 1549. Step inside and you will find walls covered in stunning azulejos, traditional Portuguese tiles depicting scenes from the life of Saint Amaro. This saint was revered as a miraculous healer of broken bones, and believers with fractures would stand beside the altar hoping for recovery.

The chapel became famous for its vibrant celebrations. Every January 15, the large Galician community arrived in festive dress, playing bagpipes and castanets in honor of their beloved Saint Amaro. These festivities lasted for weeks, with fireworks lighting the night sky so brilliantly that people across the river could see the glow. In 1910, the same year Portugal became a republic, the chapel received official recognition as a National Monument by decree on July 16. The steep stone stairway leading to its entrance reflects the mysticism of this city built on seven hills.
