You are standing where one of Europe's most notorious red light districts became a vibrant pink celebration of reinvention. This riverside district takes its name from the Sodré family, wealthy 15th century merchants who ran maritime businesses here. Ships arrived daily, sailors flooded the streets, and the neighborhood thrived as a major trading port. Everything changed on November 1, 1755.

A massive earthquake struck during morning mass on All Saints' Day. Terrified survivors rushed to these docks seeking safety, only to face a tsunami that crashed 250 meters inland, sweeping people and buildings into the Tagus River. The area rebuilt, but Rua Nova do Carvalho earned a scandalous reputation. For over a century, this street was the heart of the city's red light district. Brothels lined the cobblestones, their doors painted with names like "Copenhagen" and "Stockholm" to lure northern European sailors looking for a wild night ashore.

In 2011, city officials launched a bold transformation. They painted the entire street bright pink in 2013, closed the brothels, and welcomed new bars and clubs. The color choice was deliberate: turning "red light" literally pink symbolized the neighborhood's dramatic shift from vice to nightlife destination.
