In the heart of Cais do Sodré stands a church with a remarkable secret: it became a lifeline for Irish priests when practicing Catholicism in Ireland meant risking execution. In 1639, Irish Dominican friar Daniel O'Daly founded the College of Corpo Santo here, establishing what would become known as the Martyr's Seminary. Young Irishmen traveled secretly to this waterfront location to train for the priesthood, something the brutal Penal Laws made punishable by death back home.

Many graduates who returned to Ireland to celebrate Mass in hidden locations were captured and killed. O'Daly himself was no ordinary priest. He served as a trusted diplomat for Portuguese kings and played a crucial role in arranging the marriage between Catherine of Braganza and England's King Charles II in 1662. His diplomatic skills helped secure important alliances for Portugal during turbulent times.

The catastrophic 1755 earthquake leveled the original buildings and destroyed O'Daly's tomb in the cloister. Reconstruction began immediately, and by 1771 the church and seminary stood again. For nearly four centuries, Irish Dominicans maintained this sanctuary by the Tagus River. The last priests departed in 2021, closing a chapter that stretched across 382 years of continuous Irish presence in this corner of Cais do Sodré.
