It all started with a poet nicknamed "the squeak" who gave his name to these streets where Portugal's greatest minds once gathered in gilded cafes, only to see it nearly vanish twice beneath earthquake and flames. In the 1500s, António Ribeiro, a poet from Évora known as "chiado" meaning squeak, lived along what is now Rua Garrett. His peculiar nickname stuck, eventually naming this entire neighborhood that would become the meeting place for writers, artists, and intellectuals.

Then catastrophe struck. On November 1, 1755, during All Saints' Day mass, a massive earthquake demolished churches packed with worshippers. The 14th century Carmo Convent collapsed, its walls crumbling as a tsunami surged up from the Tagus. Fires raged for nearly a week. The convent's skeletal ruins at Largo do Carmo still stand as a haunting reminder. Rebuilt and thriving again, disaster returned on August 25, 1988. A fire erupted in a department store on Rua do Carmo, devouring 18 buildings. Over 1,680 firefighters fought the inferno. Two died, nearly 2,000 lost jobs.

Architect Álvaro Siza Vieira meticulously reconstructed the neighborhood. At Café A Brasileira on Rua Garrett, opened in 1905, Fernando Pessoa spent countless hours writing poetry over coffee and absinthe. His bronze statue still sits outside, forever frozen in creative contemplation.
