This place carries the memory of a man who was not one person, but 75 different writers living inside a single mind. At Café A Brasileira in Chiado, a bronze statue marks where Fernando Pessoa spent countless hours creating an entire universe of poets. Born in 1888, Pessoa invented what he called heteronyms. These were not pen names but fully realized authors with their own personalities, beliefs, and writing styles.

Alberto Caeiro was a simple shepherd who wrote about nature. Ricardo Reis, a doctor who crafted classical odes. Álvaro de Campos, a naval engineer with wild, passionate verse. Each heteronym had a complete biography, and they even criticized each other's work in literary journals. Most people who saw Pessoa at this café had no idea of his genius. He worked as a commercial translator and published only one poetry book in Portuguese during his lifetime: Mensagem in 1933.

Two years later, at age 47, he died from liver disease. His final words, written in English: "I know not what tomorrow will bring." After his death, a trunk was found in his home at Rua Coelho da Rocha containing over 25,000 manuscript pages. These revealed masterpieces that would establish Pessoa as one of the greatest poets of the 20th century.
