Right here, at the corner of Rua do Carmo and Rua Garrett, the worst fire in over 200 years tore through the heart of the city's most beloved shopping district. On August 25, 1988, at around 9:45 in the morning, flames erupted from the Grandella department store, one of the area's most iconic retail landmarks. The fire spread with terrifying speed through 18 buildings, destroying nearly 10,000 square meters of historic architecture.

Narrow cobblestone streets prevented fire trucks from getting close, and firefighters battled the blaze for more than 15 hours. The inferno consumed everything in its path, from elegant 18th century facades to modern shops. Two people died in the flames, including firefighter Joaquim Pinto dos Santos, while 73 others were injured. Between 200 and 300 residents lost their homes overnight, and nearly 2,000 people lost their jobs as famous stores like Grandella and Jerónimo Martins vanished forever.

The devastation was compared to the 1755 earthquake. Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira led the reconstruction, carefully restoring the neighborhood's historic character while adding modern safety features. The rebuilding took nearly a decade and transformed the area into what stands here now.
