Step into a marketplace where treasures have changed hands for over 750 years, making this one of Europe's oldest continuously running flea markets. At Campo de Santa Clara, vendors spread vintage azulejos, antique furniture, and military medals across blankets just as traders have done since 1272. Originally called Mercado Franco de Lisboa, this market began its life near São Jorge Castle before embarking on a centuries long journey through the city.

The devastating 1755 earthquake forced the market from Rossio to Praça da Alegria. It wandered to Campo dos Mártires da Pátria in 1823, returned to Praça da Alegria months later, then settled back at Campo dos Mártires in 1835 before finally arriving here in 1882. The curious name Feira da Ladra, commonly translated as "Thieves' Market," first appeared in official records in 1610. Some locals believe it actually derives from "ladro," Portuguese for flea, referring to the tiny insects hiding in secondhand furniture.

What started as a Tuesday only tradition expanded to include Saturdays in 1903. Every week, the square transforms into a living museum where handmade crafts, vinyl records, and forgotten Portuguese heirlooms wait to be rediscovered.
