This port city remained an island of light while Europe drowned in darkness. Between 1940 and 1945, nearly one million desperate souls flooded these streets, making this harbor the last gateway out of Nazi occupied Europe. Ships departing from the docks below carried refugees to America, Brazil, anywhere beyond Hitler's reach. Jews, artists, intellectuals, and families who had lost everything waited in cafes around Rossio Square, clutching transit papers that meant the difference between life and death. One man's defiance changed history.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes, serving as Portuguese consul in Bordeaux, received explicit orders in June 1940 to deny visas to Jews and refugees. He locked himself in his office instead. For three days and nights without sleep, he signed approximately 30,000 visas for anyone who needed them, regardless of religion or nationality. The cost was brutal. Authorities recalled him, put him on trial, and destroyed his career. Unable to work or support his 15 children, Sousa Mendes died penniless in 1954. During his darkest days, his family ate at a Jewish soup kitchen.

When told it was meant for refugees, he replied simply: "But we too are refugees." His courage opened a pathway to freedom. Jewish aid organizations like COMASSIS operated throughout the city, providing shelter and help to an estimated 60,000 to 80,000 Jewish refugees who escaped through Portugal during the war.
