Within the walls of this Carmelite church, a king's heart has rested for over three centuries. King Pedro II, known as "the Pacific," died on December 9, 1706, and his heart was separated from his body to be buried here, a practice reserved for European nobility in medieval times. Pedro II became regent in 1668 after deposing his brother, King Afonso VI, who was mentally unstable and unfit to rule. He guided Portugal through turbulent times, securing peace with Spain in 1668 and later navigating the complex War of Spanish Succession.

His reign brought stability after decades of conflict. In 1694, Pedro II became perpetual judge of the Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora da Quietação, the religious organization that governed this church. This position reflected his deep personal connection to the Convento das Flamengas and the Alcântara neighborhood where he lived and governed. When he died at age 58 at the nearby Palhavã Palace, his body was interred in the royal Pantheon of the Braganzas. But his heart was placed here, marked by a stone plaque still visible in the church. Heart burials allowed royalty to be memorialized in multiple meaningful locations. For Pedro II, this church represented the spiritual center of the neighborhood where he spent his final years as king.
