This elegant building on Rua da Academia das Ciências once housed Franciscan friars before becoming the birthplace of Portugal's scientific renaissance. When the Academy of Sciences moved here in 1834, it transformed a 16th century convent into the nation's intellectual heart. On December 24, 1779, two men changed Portugal's future. The Duke of Lafões, a nobleman who had lived in exile, and José Correia da Serra, a forward-thinking priest, founded the Royal Academy of Sciences with Queen Maria I's blessing.

They rejected the idea that science should exist only in books. Their motto declared: "Unless what we do is useful, our fame is vain." Portugal had fallen behind Europe during centuries of isolation. The Academy reversed this decline. It published the country's only scientific journal where mathematicians and researchers could share discoveries. In 1811, it launched Portugal's first vaccination program, saving countless lives. By 1857, it had established the nation's Geological Commission.

The baroque hall upstairs, completed in 1795 with stunning ceiling frescoes, witnessed these achievements. Religious orders were dissolved in 1834, and the government entrusted this convent and its remarkable library to the Academy. The institution became the official guardian of the Portuguese language, a role it maintains through rigorous scholarship.
