Here on number 27 of Rua do Capelão, in the heart of Mouraria, the voice that shaped fado forever fell silent on 30 November 1846. This modest building, now marked as Casa da Severa, witnessed the final moments of Maria Severa Onofriana, the woman who transformed a musical style from the streets into Portugal's most expressive art form. Maria Severa was born in 1820 into poverty, the daughter of a tavern keeper in Mouraria.

She became the first fadista to achieve widespread fame, known not just for her haunting voice but also her exceptional guitar playing. What made her revolutionary was how she broke through rigid class barriers: a woman from the brothels who performed for counts and nobility, captivating audiences across social divides. Her death certificate reveals she died of apoplexy at just 26 years old, without receiving last rites.

Despite her fame during life, she was buried in a common grave at Alto de São João Cemetery, reportedly without a coffin as she wished. No recordings of her voice survive, yet her influence on fado was so profound that she became its first legend. The building where she spent her final days stands as a testament to the woman who gave fado its soul.
