Standing before six wooden panels at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga is a window into 15th century Portugal, painted by a man who changed how an entire nation saw itself. Nuno Gonçalves was court painter to King Afonso V, appointed in 1450 during the golden age of Portuguese exploration. His masterpiece, the Saint Vincent Panels created around 1470, shows something never seen before in Portuguese art: 58 real people from every level of society.

Fishermen stand beside princes, priests beside merchants, all gathered around Saint Vincent, Portugal's patron saint. Each face is distinct, each person rendered with striking realism that rivaled the Flemish masters like Jan van Eyck. Gonçalves captured a pivotal moment when Portugal was conquering territories in North Africa and preparing to dominate global trade routes.

The panels likely commemorated these military victories, showing a confident nation at the height of its power. For nearly 400 years, these panels sat forgotten in a monastery at São Vicente de Fora. When they were rediscovered in 1882, historians struggled to identify the artist until finally recognizing Gonçalves' revolutionary technique. His work remains the finest example of Portuguese Renaissance painting.
