Before your eyes is the gleaming white dome of Basílica da Estrela, built from a mother's desperate prayer. In 1760, Queen Maria I of Portugal stood before an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and made a vow: if she could bear a son to secure her throne and prevent her country from descending into noble infighting, she would build the greatest church in the city. Her prayer was answered in 1761 when Prince José was born.

Construction began in 1779. But fate was cruel. José died from smallpox in 1788 at just 27 years old, two years before his mother's promise was fulfilled. The devastated queen, who later struggled with severe mental illness marked by religious mania, was eventually laid to rest inside her own creation in 1816. This became the world's first church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Inside, pink, grey, and yellow marble form intricate geometric patterns beneath the soaring dome.

Hidden in a room near the queen's elaborate tomb sits an extraordinary nativity scene with over 500 figures carved from cork and terracotta by sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro between 1781 and 1785. Across the street, Jardim da Estrela opened in 1852 as a public garden for residents of this western neighborhood. Its wrought iron bandstand, built in 1884, was moved here from Avenida da Liberdade in 1936.
