This is when one of Europe's most devastating earthquakes struck on November 1, 1755, destroying 85% of the buildings around you and killing up to 40,000 people in minutes. The man who rebuilt this place from total ruin was Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the Marquis of Pombal. He was the prime minister when the earthquake, tsunami, and massive fires turned the city into rubble. When officials asked him what to do, Pombal's answer was direct: “Bury the dead and heal the living.”

What makes this reconstruction remarkable is how scientific it was. Pombal hired architects to design Europe's first earthquake resistant buildings using a wooden framework called "caging" that could flex during tremors. They built small models and had soldiers march around them to test if the structures would survive shaking. The medieval maze of narrow streets was replaced with wide, straight avenues and uniform buildings.

Pombal sent detailed questionnaires to every parish in the country, asking when the earthquake started, how buildings fell, and whether animals behaved strangely beforehand. This made him one of the founders of modern seismology. The organized downtown district you see was built in less than a year.
