You are standing before one of Europe's most powerful symbols of resilience: a 40 meter bronze monument honoring the man who rebuilt an entire city from catastrophic ruins. This is Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the Marquis of Pombal, positioned at the top of Avenida da Liberdade where it meets Eduardo VII Park. On November 1, 1755, at 9:40 in the morning, a massive earthquake struck with a magnitude between 8.5 and 9.0.

The ground shook violently for six minutes. Massive tsunamis followed, then fires that burned for five days straight. Over 90 percent of all buildings collapsed. Between 15,000 and 75,000 people lost their lives in what became one of history's deadliest natural disasters. Pombal served as Prime Minister under King José I from 1750 to 1777. His response was immediate and decisive. He famously ordered: "Bury the dead and heal the living." Within one year, the city was partially rebuilt.

He revolutionized urban design with wide, straight streets arranged in geometric patterns and introduced Europe's first earthquake resistant construction using the innovative cage building method. The statue shows Pombal with his hand resting on a lion, representing power, gazing down at the Baixa district he completely redesigned. Broken stones at the monument's base symbolize the earthquake's devastation.
