You've arrived at a terrace that marks where a medieval city gate once stood, a gateway that vanished in one of history's most devastating disasters.

The Portas do Sol, meaning Gates of the Sun, takes its name from a Moorish gate that guarded this spot for centuries. The Arabic called it Bab al Maqbara, the easternmost entrance where morning light first touched the walled city. Built between the 8th and 12th centuries, this gate was part of the defensive walls protecting the settlement perched above the Alfama neighborhood. Everything changed on November 1, 1755. A massive earthquake lasting over three minutes struck at 9:40 in the morning, when churches were packed with worshippers celebrating All Saints' Day. The shaking tore open cracks in the streets, collapsing buildings across the city. Then came tsunami waves from the Tagus River, followed by fires that burned for nearly a week.

The medieval gate was destroyed, along with 90% of the city's structures. Alfama, spreading below this viewpoint, survived the catastrophe largely intact thanks to its solid bedrock foundation. The neighborhood's labyrinth of narrow streets still follows its original medieval layout, a rare glimpse into the city that existed before the earthquake reshaped everything around it.
