Welcome to one of Alfama's most extraordinary survival stories. The historic parish of Santo Estêvão, perched on this hillside, endured what most of the capital could not: the catastrophic earthquake of November 1, 1755. At 9:40 AM on All Saints' Day, the ground shook violently for up to six minutes. Four fifths of the surrounding city collapsed into rubble. Buildings crumbled, fires erupted, and a massive tsunami followed.

An estimated 40,000 to 50,000 people perished. Yet Santo Estêvão suffered only minor damage. The church of Santo Estêvão lost just one of its two baroque towers. The humble two and three story houses around you remained largely standing, their walls holding firm while wealthier districts below were obliterated. These buildings you see today are some of the few authentic witnesses to pre earthquake architecture.

The reason lies beneath your feet. Santo Estêvão sits on solid bedrock at elevated ground. This geological foundation absorbed seismic shocks differently than the loose sediment and landfill soil of lower lying areas. The height also protected residents from the tsunami waves that surged through coastal neighborhoods minutes after the tremors stopped, sweeping thousands into the sea. This parish became an unintended laboratory proving how geology and elevation determine survival during earthquakes.
