On a quiet September night in 1758, shots shattered the darkness near Belém as assassins opened fire on King José I's royal carriage. The king survived with minor wounds, but the attack unleashed one of the most savage political purges in Portuguese history. Within days, the powerful Távora family and the Duke of Aveiro stood accused of orchestrating the assassination attempt.

The Marquis of Pombal, José's iron-fisted prime minister, saw his chance to destroy the old aristocracy that opposed his reforms. Arrests swept through noble houses as torture extracted confessions from the accused. The trials became a spectacle of terror. In January 1759, the Távoras were publicly executed in a horrific display meant to crush any thought of rebellion. Their estates were seized, their family name legally erased, and their coat of arms smashed to pieces. The Jesuit order, linked to the conspiracy, was expelled from the entire kingdom.

The Igreja da Memória now stands on the exact spot where the ambush took place. Built by royal decree, this church commemorates the king's narrow escape from death. Its construction served both as thanksgiving and warning, a stone monument to the night that changed Portugal's power structure forever and gave Pombal unchallenged control over the nation.
