In the summer of 1147, the hilltop fortress overlooking the Tagus River became the center of a brutal four month siege that would determine the fate of an entire nation. King Afonso I of Portugal had just broken away from the Kingdom of León when an unexpected opportunity arrived: thousands of crusaders sailing to the Holy Land stopped at his shores.

The king convinced these warriors to help him capture the Moorish stronghold. Together, they surrounded the massive stone walls while defenders inside prepared for the worst. As summer turned to autumn, food ran out and desperation grew on both sides. The crusaders built wooden siege towers and battered the gates daily. In one legendary moment, a knight named Martim Moniz threw himself between a closing gate, using his body to keep it open long enough for soldiers to rush through.

His sacrifice became a defining symbol of Portuguese courage. On October 25, 1147, after 17 weeks of fighting, the Moorish rulers surrendered. This victory gave Portugal its first major city and established what would become the nation's capital. The conquest marked a turning point in the Reconquista, proving that Christian forces could reclaim the peninsula's great urban centers.
