This place has watched over the city and the Tagus River for more than a thousand years from the highest hilltop in the capital. São Jorge Castle stands on ground inhabited since the 8th century BC, making it one of Europe's oldest continuously occupied sites. The Moors constructed this fortress in the 11th century as a fortified citadel to protect their strategic port. In 1147, King Afonso Henriques, Portugal's first monarch, stormed the castle after a fierce siege and claimed it for the newly independent kingdom.

He converted the military stronghold into a royal palace where Portuguese kings would rule for the next four centuries. Within these ancient walls, coronations took place, heirs were born, and momentous decisions shaped the nation's destiny. The castle welcomed explorer Vasco da Gama in 1498 after his groundbreaking voyage opened the sea route to India. The catastrophic 1755 earthquake devastated much of the palace complex and severely damaged the fortifications.

Beneath the castle grounds, archaeological excavations have uncovered remarkable traces of Phoenician traders, Roman settlers, and Visigoth rulers, revealing layer upon layer of civilizations that recognized this hilltop's strategic importance across three millennia.
