On this small square at Place Émile‑Goudeau in Montmartre stands Le Bateau‑Lavoir. The name literally means the wash‑boat studio. It refers to the rickety laundry boats on the Seine, floating laundries where women once washed clothes, but such boats were never here. The building earned the nickname because it was just as fragile and basic as those boats: wooden corridors, crooked floors, and barely any comfort.

Yet in the early 20th century it became a legendary spot. In 1904 Pablo Picasso moved in, alongside Modigliani, Juan Gris, and Max Jacob. Conditions were primitive—one tap and one toilet for everyone, freezing in winter and sweltering in summer—but the creative energy was immense. It was here that Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d’Avignon in 1907, the work that marked the birth of Cubism.

You can see this iconic painting in the attached photo. It wasn’t a museum but a gathering place where painters, poets, and writers mingled. In 1908 Picasso hosted a famous banquet in honor of Henri Rousseau, attended by Apollinaire and Gertrude Stein. In 1970 the building was mostly destroyed by fire. In 1978 it was rebuilt with the same layout but in concrete. Today it once again houses artist studios, and walking past the façade you can still feel the echo of its artistic past.
