Right here in Prague Castle, one of history's most eccentric rulers turned his home into something between a science lab, a magic den, and the world's most extraordinary museum. Emperor Rudolf II, who ruled from 1576 to 1612, was consumed by a single obsession: unlocking the hidden secrets of the universe. He filled these castle grounds with up to 200 alchemists at a time — so many that they spilled out of the buildings and set up their forges among the flowerbeds. Rudolf himself worked experiments in his personal laboratory, once singeing his beard when something went wrong. But alchemy was only part of it. Rudolf also assembled a breathtaking "Wonder Chamber" — a Wunderkammer — packed with masterworks by Dürer, Raphael, and Titian, alongside clockwork automata, perpetual-motion machines, and oddities from across the known world. It wasn't just a collection. He believed it was a physical model of the cosmos itself. Among his court were real visionaries — Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler both worked here — alongside spectacular fraudsters like the earless con-man Edward Kelley, who claimed he could turn metal into gold. Spoiler: he couldn't. Rudolf had him imprisoned, and Kelley died trying to escape. This place was equal parts brilliance and madness — and it changed history either way.
