Right now, you're standing in one of the most extraordinary cities in European history — a place that, for nearly 30 years, was the beating heart of an empire and the world's greatest center of occult science. In 1583, Emperor Rudolf II moved his court from Vienna to Prague, and nothing in Europe would ever be quite the same. Rudolf was no ordinary ruler. Raised in the stiff, formal world of the Spanish court, he returned to the Habsburg lands quiet, withdrawn, and consumed by a single obsession: unlocking the hidden secrets of the cosmos. Here in Prague Castle, he assembled the most astonishing collection of his age. Paintings by Dürer and Brueghel hung alongside clockwork automata, exotic animals, and scientific instruments. He called it his Wonder Chamber — a miniature universe, a "theatre of the world." But Rudolf wanted more than beautiful objects. He invited Europe's greatest minds and most notorious charlatans alike. Astronomers Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler worked here, laying the foundations of modern science. Meanwhile, the eccentric wizard John Dee tried summoning angels in a crystal ball, and over 200 alchemists crowded the castle gardens, chasing the philosopher's stone. Rudolf's Prague was a city suspended between magic and science — and you're standing right in the middle of it.
