That red baroque facade is essentially a disguise. Behind it sits one of the oldest surviving churches in Bohemia, and what happened inside these walls in 973 quietly rewrote the rules of power in this entire region.

Before that year, Bohemia answered to Regensburg in Bavaria. Church disputes, royal coronations, appointments to positions of authority, all of it required Bavarian approval. Prince Boleslav II decided that arrangement had run its course. He persuaded Rome to establish an independent diocese, with this basilica as its headquarters and a man named Detmar as its first bishop. From that moment, Bohemia stopped asking permission.

The political consequences were immediate and lasting. An independent diocese meant control over church law, property rights, and local appointments, none of which had to be cleared with foreign authorities ever again.

There is one more layer worth knowing. This basilica also housed Bohemia's first convent, led by Mlada, the prince's own sister. The women there managed large estates, educated daughters of noble families, and wielded genuine political influence.

So behind that bright red exterior, you have Romanesque stonework from the 970s, the decade this place transformed from a church into a headquarters. Bavaria never really got over it.
