1,144 years of unbroken rule from this hilltop. It started in 880 when Prince Bořivoj of the Přemyslid dynasty picked this exact spot to build a wooden fortress. The river below. Defensive height. Clear sight lines. Everything a ruler needed. Bořivoj had just converted to Christianity in a pagan territory. The fortress was about more than defense. Within years, he built the Church of the Virgin Mary here, the first Christian church in Bohemia. Not devotion. Strategy. Christianity connected him to the Frankish Empire and the network of Christian rulers across Europe. Allies. Trading partners. Protection. The church made his power legitimate in European eyes. Here's what separates this place from every other castle: it never stopped being a seat of power. Not once in 1,144 years. Czech kings ruled from these walls. Holy Roman Emperors. Habsburg monarchs. Czechoslovak presidents. The Czech president still works in these buildings. No other castle complex in the world has maintained continuous political authority this long. The wooden walls disappeared centuries ago. The stone courtyards and cathedral you see came much later. But the power? That landed on this hill in 880 and never left.
