For tens of thousands of people, each day starts or ends at the same place: Rotterdam Centraal. More than a station, it’s a crossroads of stories, motion, and connection.
Where travelers now move through a sleek hall, there were once four separate stations. In 1957, the first unified central station brought them together—creating a single point of departure in every direction.
The original building, designed by Sybold van Ravesteyn, reflected its time. Some details remain today: the iconic clock, the glowing “Centraal Station” letters, and the platform 1 sculptures known as “speculaasjes.”
As rail traffic grew and high-speed lines arrived, a new station became necessary. In 2014, the current Rotterdam Centraal opened its doors—light-filled, spacious, and future-focused.
Now, over 100,000 travelers pass through daily. Trains, metros, trams, and buses weave together in seamless choreography. The Thalys and Eurostar connect Rotterdam with Paris, London, and beyond.
