Located on the Clingendael Estate in The Hague, the Clingendael Institute is an independent research center specializing in international relations. Founded in 1983 by the Dutch government, its mission is to offer politically neutral, high-quality research and advice on global issues. The institute aims to bridge the gap between policymakers, academics, and the wider public.

In today’s increasingly complex world, objective and thorough analysis is vital. Clingendael serves as a key knowledge center, offering expertise in geopolitics, international security, diplomacy, and economic affairs — supporting sound policy decisions. The institute is housed on the historic Clingendael Estate, which dates back to the 16th century. Originally built by Jacob van der Cloese, a wealthy merchant from The Hague, the estate gets its name from the valley ('dael') nestled between the dunes ('clingen').

A true gem of the estate is the Japanese Garden. Created in 1910 by Baroness Marguérite van Brienen after her visits to Japan, the garden brings a touch of Japanese serenity to the Netherlands. With ponds, lush vegetation, bridges, and pavilions, it’s a tranquil corner of cultural beauty in The Hague.
