Tucked away in the greenery of The Hague Forest lies Huis ten Bosch, a stately palace and a symbol of Dutch royalty. Built in the 17th century at the initiative of Prince Maurits, son of William of Orange, it was designed by the renowned architect Pieter Post and stands elegantly among ponds and woods.

Huis ten Bosch has a rich history marked by power, politics, and renewal. Originally a country retreat, it soon became a refuge for the House of Orange during turbulent times. In the 18th century, Stadtholder William V sought shelter there during the Patriots' uprising. In the 19th century, it became the home of King William II and his family. During World War II, the palace narrowly escaped demolition by the German occupiers, who planned to clear the site for military installations.

After the war, it underwent careful restoration, integrating modern features like central heating, telephones, and even an elevator—striking contrasts with its classical exterior. Later, Queen Beatrix used the palace as her official residence. Today, King Willem-Alexander and his family live there. Although closed to the public, Huis ten Bosch remains a venue for state visits and official ceremonies. A walk through The Hague Forest offers a glimpse of the palace and its majestic setting. Huis ten Bosch stands quietly, a regal witness to Dutch history.
