In the Lichtental neighborhood's heart stands a baroque church with twin towers where two musical titans crossed paths, shaping the soul of classical music forever. The Lichtentaler Pfarrkirche, known to locals as the Schubertkirche, rises from a quiet residential quarter in the 9th district, just streets away from where Franz Schubert was born.

Emperor Charles VI laid the foundation stone in 1712 for this church dedicated to the Fourteen Holy Helpers. When young Schubert was baptized here on February 1, 1797, his father already ran the parish school next door. The boy soon sang in the choir and played the magnificent organ installed in 1738, receiving his first musical training within these baroque walls.

At 17, Schubert composed his first Mass in F major for the church's centenary celebration in 1814. He conducted the premiere himself on September 25, revealing extraordinary talent that would draw comparisons to Ludwig van Beethoven, who lived in the same district and dominated the musical scene.

The young Schubert admired Beethoven deeply, though his teacher Antonio Salieri harbored prejudices against the older composer. When Beethoven died in 1827, Schubert attended the funeral service. The church still hosts concerts today, including performances on the historic Schubert organ from 1774.
