In front of you stands Villa Heineken, designed around 1891 by architect A.L. (Dolf) van Gendt, also known for the Concertgebouw. The villa reflects the personal and representative world of Gerard Adriaan Heineken (1841–1893), the brewer who transformed a local business into a major enterprise. Gerard was the son of Cornelis Heineken and Anna Geertruida van der Paauw.

His father was a successful merchant in cheese and groceries, but after his death in 1862, Gerard turned toward brewing. Two years later, at the age of 22, he purchased the De Hooiberg brewery on the Nieuwezijds Achterburgwal. Gerard married Marie de Pesters, with whom he had four children. One of them, Henry Pierre Heineken, carried the company forward, introducing modernization in the twentieth century. His son Alfred Heineken built Heineken into a global brand through creative marketing and international expansion. Today, the family remains closely involved through Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken, Alfred’s daughter, one of the Netherlands’ most influential business figures.
