Walking down Berlin’s busy Kurfürstendamm, the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche immediately catches the eye. This iconic church has a history as dramatic as the city itself. Built between 1891 and 1895, it was a grand tribute by Kaiser Wilhelm II to his grandfather Wilhelm I. Architect Franz Schwechten designed the imposing structure in Neo-Romanesque style. On the night of November 23, 1943, the church was heavily damaged in an Allied air raid.

Only part of the tower and a few walls remained standing. These ruins were deliberately preserved as a powerful symbol of the war’s devastation and a lasting reminder in the heart of the city. Despite the destruction, the church tower became a beacon of resilience for Berliners. Restoration and preservation have always been driven by community efforts. Today, the Gedächtniskirche is one of Berlin’s most famous landmarks.

Berliners jokingly call the mix of ruins and new buildings “the powder box and lipstick,” with the old tower nicknamed “the hollow tooth” (der hohle Zahn). This blend of old and new captures the spirit of Berlin – a city that constantly reinvents itself. Alongside the ruins, a new church and an octagonal bell tower were erected after the war, designed by Egon Eiermann. Together they form a striking visual metaphor for destruction and renewal.
