Look around you—this place is not just a park or a zoo; it is the oldest zoological garden in Germany and one of the most famous in the world. Established in 1844, Berlin’s Zoologischer Garten was originally designed as a royal menagerie and has since grown into a vast, diverse sanctuary for over 20,000 animals from nearly 1,400 species. One remarkable fact is that the Berlin Zoo was the first zoo worldwide to successfully breed giant pandas in captivity, with the birth of "Bao Bao" in 2016 marking a significant milestone. This achievement reflects the zoo's pioneering role in global conservation efforts, particularly for endangered species.

The zoo occupies about 35 hectares in the city’s Tiergarten district, blending natural landscapes with historic architecture. Despite severe damage during World War II, many original buildings, including the iconic Elephant Gate, were restored, preserving the garden’s 19th-century charm. In addition to animals, the zoo’s aquarium—one of the largest in Europe—houses thousands of aquatic creatures and offers visitors a glimpse into underwater biodiversity rarely seen elsewhere. Berlin’s Zoologischer Garten is also notable for its research and educational programs.

It collaborates with scientists worldwide, contributing vital data for animal protection and species preservation. Visitors not only encounter fascinating creatures but also learn about global ecological challenges. An intriguing yet lesser-known detail is that the zoo inspired the popular Berlin train station and nearby area’s name: "Zoologischer Garten" station, highlighting the zoo’s cultural importance to the city’s identity.
