Bahnhof Zoo, officially Berlin Zoologischer Garten, holds a special place in Berlin’s history and culture. Opened in 1882 as part of the Stadtbahn between Charlottenburg and Ostbahnhof, it became a key metro station in 1902 with the launch of the U2, Berlin’s first metro line. During the Cold War, Bahnhof Zoo was West Berlin’s main station, retaining this role until the Berlin Hauptbahnhof opened in 2006.

The station is most infamous for its association with the drug scene of the 1970s. The story of Christiane Felscherinow, a teenage heroin addict who frequented the station, drew global attention. Her 1978 memoir Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo became an international bestseller, and the 1981 film adaptation, featuring music by David Bowie, cemented Bahnhof Zoo’s place in popular culture. In the same era, it was also linked to prostitution and drug activity, particularly along Jebenstrasse, a dark chapter documented in films and reports.

Today, Bahnhof Zoo mainly serves regional trains but remains a busy metro hub. Despite upgrades, its infrastructure struggles with modern traffic. Its layered past and ongoing role make it a poignant landmark in Berlin.
