Standing here on Rua Coelho da Rocha, you're at the entrance of one of the neighborhood's most enduring gathering places. Since 1934, this covered market has served locals their daily needs, from fresh Atlantic fish to seasonal vegetables. What makes this place remarkable is how it has transformed while keeping its soul intact. The original architecture from 1934 still stands, but the market has lived through two major renovations.

The first came in 1991, updating the facilities while preserving the structure. Then in 2013, architect António Maria Braga reimagined the interior space. He added communal dining areas and gourmet food stalls, creating a new kind of market experience. Braga's sensitive approach to traditional architecture later earned him the 2019 Rafael Manzano Prize. Walk inside and you'll see how past and present coexist. Elderly vendors who've worked here for decades sell their fresh catch beside modern sushi counters.

Families still shop for groceries at the original stalls, while others sit at shared tables enjoying wine and Portuguese petiscos. The market opens daily from 10am until 11pm, extending to 1am on weekends. This is where the neighborhood eats, shops, and meets, far from the tourist crowds that pack the riverside Time Out Market.
