The king who turned Portugal into Europe's wealthiest empire never expected to wear the crown. Manuel I, called the Fortunate, was the ninth child of a duke, born in Alcochete in 1469. When his cousin King John II lost his only heir in a tragic accident, Manuel inherited not just a throne but a nation burning with ambition to explore the unknown. His reign from 1495 to 1521 became Portugal's golden age of discovery.

Manuel backed Vasco da Gama's daring 1498 voyage that finally cracked the route to India by sea, breaking Venice's stranglehold on the spice trade. Suddenly, pepper, cinnamon and cloves flowed directly into Portuguese ports, turning Manuel into Europe's richest monarch. In 1500, Pedro Álvares Cabral claimed Brazil for the crown. The Portuguese flag now flew from African shores to Asian markets.

With wealth pouring in from three continents, Manuel transformed the Belém waterfront where sailors once prayed before their voyages. He commissioned the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery as his final resting place and the fortified Belém Tower to guard the harbour entrance. These riverside monuments still stand as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, testaments to an age when Portugal ruled the waves. Manuel died at 52 during a plague outbreak in December 1521.
