You're standing on the Ferdinand Bolstraat right now, and believe it or not, this very street is the reason millions of Dutch people have pulled a croquette out of a wall.

It all started in 1941, when a baker named Johan de Borst founded Maison FEBO, initially just a modest little bakery. The name "Febo" was lifted directly from the Ferdinand Bolstraat, because this was the street where Johan learned his baking trade and where he originally dreamed of opening his first shop. The name was already on paper before the location was even confirmed, and it stuck around for good reason. What made FEBO truly special was the "automatiek," a brilliantly simple system where freshly prepared snacks like croquettes and frikandellen sit behind small glass doors in a heated wall. You drop in a coin, open the door, and your snack appears.

No waiting, no small talk, no menu to overthink. Just hot food, straight from the wall. The first official FEBO branch on this very street opened on 9 June 1993, turning a local bakery dream into a nationwide Dutch icon.

Today, FEBO remains one of those wonderfully Dutch things that tourists find bizarre and locals find completely normal. Which, honestly, is the highest possible compliment.
