This city was once torn from Moorish hands by a warrior king who had fought his own mother to forge a nation. Afonso Henriques was born around 1109 when Portugal did not exist as a kingdom. His father, a French count, ruled a small territory in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. When his father died in 1112, his mother Teresa took control but formed a romantic alliance with a Galician nobleman, threatening Portuguese independence.

At just 19 years old, Afonso rebelled against his mother. In 1128, at the Battle of São Mamede near Guimarães, he defeated her forces and sent her into exile. He then proclaimed himself Prince of Portugal and turned his attention south toward Moorish territories. His greatest triumph came on October 25, 1147, when he conquered this strategic settlement on the Tagus River.

The siege lasted nearly four months. English, German, and Flemish crusaders stopped here on their way to the Holy Land and joined the battle. When the walls finally fell, Portugal gained its future capital and a vital Atlantic port. Afonso ruled for 46 years until his death in 1185. Pope Alexander III officially recognized him as King of Portugal in 1179 through the papal bull Manifestis Probatum.
